Lago di Tenno: A Turquoise Jewel Tucked Away in the Trentino Mountains

Lago di Tenno, or Lake Tenno, is a small, pristine alpine lake nestled in the mountains of Trentino, Italy. It's famous for its unbelievably turquoise water, the intense colour stemming from the lake's source: underground springs fed by the glaciers of the Brenta Dolomites. Unlike the larger, bustling lakes nearby like Garda and Ledro, Lago di Tenno offers a more tranquil and intimate experience. Its compact size (around 220 meters in diameter) and surrounding dense forests create a sense of seclusion and natural beauty that’s simply captivating. The lake’s water level fluctuates throughout the year, sometimes revealing a small island known as "Isola '86" (Island '86), formed by a landslide in 1986.

What to See and Do

The main attraction, of course, is the lake itself!

  • Swimming: Take a dip in the crystal-clear, though often chilly, waters. There are several areas designated for swimming.
  • Hiking: A beautiful paved path circles the entire lake, offering stunning views from all angles. It's an easy walk suitable for most fitness levels, including families with children.
  • Photography: The lake is a photographer's paradise. Capture the vibrant colours, the reflections of the surrounding mountains, and the charm of Isola '86.
  • Relaxing: Simply find a spot on the shore, soak up the sun, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Tips for Visitors

A few things to keep in mind when planning your visit:

  • Parking: Parking near the lake can be limited, especially during peak season (summer). Arrive early or be prepared for a short walk from the overflow parking areas.
  • Facilities: While there are a couple of restaurants and cafes near the lake, options are somewhat limited. Consider packing a picnic to enjoy by the water.
  • Footwear: The path around the lake is paved, but comfortable walking shoes are still recommended. If you plan to swim, bring water shoes as the shore can be rocky.

How to Reach Lago di Tenno

Getting to this little slice of paradise is relatively straightforward:

  • By Car: The easiest way is by car. Take the SS421 road towards Tenno from Riva del Garda (Lake Garda). Follow the signs for Lago di Tenno.
  • By Bus: Public buses also connect Riva del Garda and other nearby towns to Tenno. From the village of Tenno, it's a pleasant walk down to the lake (approximately 20 minutes).

Lago di Tenno is a true gem of the Trentino region. Its striking beauty, combined with its peaceful atmosphere, makes it a perfect destination for a relaxing day trip. If you're looking to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature, don't miss the opportunity to visit this incredible lake. You won't be disappointed.
